St John US Virgin Islands Beachfront Vacation Rental Home By Owner in Chocolate Hole on Secluded Hart Bay
Beachfront Rental Home on St. John US Virgin Islands “Odessa”
Our beachfront vacation rental home on St. John is a classic West Indian style beach house with 3 bedrooms and 3 baths, perfect for families or couples seeking a secluded retreat – no houses on either side – yet close to dining, watersports, shopping, and the National Park.
Odessa villa is 42 steps to a secluded beach with no road access. Most days one can snorkel and swim. The beach is partly sandy and great for shelling and beach combing. The main Chocolate Hole cove, always calm with good snorkeling is a five minute walk.
The house is classic West Indian design and faces directly into the tradewinds. On the upper level, the breeze goes through French doors and large arched stone windows. The house is attractively furnished, and has Caribbean art.
Each of the three bedrooms has a queen sized bed, a bath and a private deck. One bedroom is very large with a sitting area. In addition to the three bedrooms, cots and a pull out couch in the living room are available and so Odessa can sleep up to 9.
The swimming pool and large Jacuzzi are above the house with a spacious deck and impressive views. A hideaway with a hammock offers another view of Hart Bay.
The landscaping is exceptional and includes many native plants and trees; it is featured in local garden tours. Since the lot is steep, a long, meandering stone pathway leads down to the house with a private path to Hart Bay beach.
Odessa is only a 5 minute drive to the edge of town, Cruz Bay, but in a very private location — no house on either side.

I stayed here with 8 other friends for 4 nights. The accommodations were fantastic. Clean beds and baths. Decor was island shabby chic. You could tell the owner put a lot of time and heart into this place. The views! Words cannot describe the beauty that is Chocolate hole. The house is perched just high enough to get a full view of chocolate hole but just a few steps down to the ocean. The beach is rocky with some sand. You’ll find an abundance of whelks and sea urchin. The whelks are edible. In fact they are an island delicacy. Watch out for those sea urchins though. I would absolutely recommend this home to all. If you’re blessed enough to make it to St. John. This is the house to stay in.TripAdvisor Member - Belmont, NC - June 2014
Amazing Tropical Breezes
We just got back from Odessa and I wish I could have stayed another week. The owner is very concerned his guest are happy at this classic beach home. He called mid week to see if we had any concerns and then we had a nice conversation about what the islands has to offer and the beautiful landscape at the home. My one comment to him was he needs to emphasize the amazing breezes even more on his website. The concierge that delivered our provisions to the home said there are very few houses on the islands with such spectacular breezes.
The house has everything you want in a tropical rental: pool, jacuzzi, deck space, outdoor shower and beach access. You can spend hours on the beach looking at the shells and coral or just hang out at the spacious pool space and look at the amazing ocean view.June H - Rockford, IL - March 2014
Beautiful Ocean Front
My friends and I stay at Odessa beginning of august and fell in love with the house and location. Odessa is one of very few houses with beach access. The house is very charming and has the feel of a classic beach house. Everyone loved the house and the views are just amazing! The views from the three different levels are just breathtaking! It’s a perfect location because restaurants are minutes away but the property has lots of privacy. We really enjoyed the pool and jacuzzi and taking in the views from the pool deck. All of us agreed we would definitely return to Odessa!Ashley - Nashville, TN - August 2013
Best vacation ever!
My husband and I just returned from Odessa and had the best week of our lives! The view is spectacular and you can hear the sound of the waves day & night. We had planned to visit all the beaches and have dinner out but once we were on the deck we didn’t want to leave. We had crab and lobster with a good bottle of wine on the deck and just watched the sailboats cruise by. The house was clean, it had all the amenities included, no bug issues and no safety concerns. Bruce called us to see how everything was going and if we needed anything to make our stay more enjoyable. The grocery store and fish market are close but the property is quiet and secluded. We sailed on Bad Kitty one day and had a good time and visited trunk bay 1 day. We had dinner at Fatty crabs which was outstanding! I must mention you’ll fall in love with St. John as well as Kiwi the resident cat. She is too precious for words. Great vacation!Dee - Chicago, IL - February 2013
A Wonderful Stay at Odessa
My wife, my 22 year old daughter and one of her friends, and I spent a week in Odessa in February. It was our first time at the property. The close proximity to Cruz Bay was very convenient and yet we felt very secluded in Hart Bay. The view is stunning. The pool was our favorite hangout during the day. The house layout and accommodation were perfect for the 4 of us. We frequently walked down to the beach and enjoyed a stroll. Net, net…we had a wonderful time and have recommended it to our friends.David C - Columbia, SC - February 2013
A Special Place
Our week at Odessa was amazing. There is much magical here. Close proximity to town, breathtaking view, walking access to a fine snorkel site, two cats (one feral, one sweet and funny) and an outdoor shower that we loved. Coincidentally, we went during the peak of hurricane season. Many places closed while we were there and we had the island to ourselves. And, the weather was excellent! I won’t give away all the secrets of Odessa, but it was the definitive old school island experience.
Five stars from us. A bonus is that the owner is a straight up guy and easy to work with.Skip - Gainesville, FL - September 2012
Great Property in the best Location
Our family of four, including two teenagers, have just returned from a wonderful week at Villa Odessa. This property has everything anyone could need for a great vacation. The villa itself has a very well equipped kitchen, cable TV and very reliable internet. The owner has also provided beach chairs, ice chests and lots of beach towels! There is plenty of room for everyone to gather together or to find their own quiet spot. We all noticed that the property is very well maintained with new decking on all of the balconies and at the pool. The landscaping is also beautiful. There are quite a few steps leading down to the property from the parking pad but these are easily manageable and very well lit at night.( The owner also takes great pains to point this out at the booking stage.) The immediate area is quiet and peaceful but at the same time it is only a 5-10 minute drive to the grocery store or Cruz Bay. I don’t think there could be a better location. We have many great memories of our stay here..mine is the lovely outdoor shower, where I probably used more water than I should but it was so enjoyable. My husband enjoyed the views and the kids enjoyed the cat “Kiwi”!!! We would not hesitate to return to this wonderful property.Glen Family - Cypress, TX - July 2012
Charming Island Getaway on St John – Hart Bay is Beautiful!
My boyfriend and I recently stayed at Odessa. We had a wonderfully peaceful time there, with a beautiful open view of Hart Bay and further along St John’s south coast. It really felt like we were “living on St. John” and enjoyed getting the fresh ocean breezes.
The owner’s description calling it a “classic rental” is very appropriate, and the pictures posted are good– it had everything we needed, beach towels, all kitchen items, etc. The kitchen is separated from the living area with a bar, so it was great when I was cooking and my boyfriend was reading on the couch – and the views from there are beautiful. The upstairs (main) bedroom is behind the kitchen and the outside deck runs the entire length of the upper floor (we only used the top bedroom, there are two bedrooms below). There is even an outdoor stone shower, which was a real vacation treat! (We understand there are many of these at homes on St. John)
The house is situated down a few steps from where we parked on a dead end road, so it is very private. We walked down to Hart Bay beach each morning on a little private path, and were usually the only two there.
The pool and deck look very new, and we spent allot of time up there –it is very peaceful. The house is close to Cruz Bay so easy to go to in for groceries or shopping. Just go to any bar and they will give you dining and shopping ideas based on what you like! Hiking and beaches are great here!Amanda K - Birmingham, AL - March 2012

Superb Beachfront Villa, St. John USVI
I have returned to this unusual beachfront villa in a very private location several times. It is only five minutes from the town of Cruz Bay. The view is astounding. It feels like you are surrounded by Hart Bay and you see the entire southern coast of St John. All amenities were provided and the management company provided all useful information. The landscaping including fruit trees were lovely and, like the house, well maintained. The upper level is of West Indian design with a breeze travelling through the French doors and stone arched windows. The “hideaway” with its swing provided an additional serene setting for relaxation. The photographs were authentic. We loved it.Margie - Washington D.C. - December 2011
Awesome View, True Relaxation.
We had a great family vacation. My daughter loved the lookout by the house where she would spend time reading on the hammock. The pool was refreshing in all the hot weather. My family would walk on the private beach and collect interesting shells. We felt like we were the only ones there, no one bothered us the whole time. The house is a short driving distance to the town, so we could go out to dinner some nights. There were 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. The house felt like one with nature as it was built into the mountain. We were surrounded by nature and felt relaxed after a stressful life at home. I definitely recommend staying here, we will be coming out again very soon.stjohnknowitall - Washington D.C. - December 2010
Great Vacation Villa!
My best friend, her husband, my husband and myself stayed in Odessa in late April 2006 (before the remodeling). It was fantastic then and I can’t wait to go back and see the new look! The pool, natural stone outdoor shower, the open layout on the main floor and privacy from those on the lower level, make this house perfect. We ate dinner on the deck or came home from on the local restaurants in nearby Cruz Bay to have drinks there in the evening or up by the pool. We loved this place. Best vacation we’ve ever went on. Can’t wait to go back!KC - St. Clair, MO - April 2006
